My name’s Natalie Pillman, and if you hear the soulful sound of an oboe drifting through the streets, that’s probably me. My oboe’s voice is warm, rich, and just a little bit unexpected—kind of like me. Whether it’s classical, jazz, or even funk, I love pushing the boundaries of what this instrument can do. Music is my way of telling stories, of connecting with people, of making change.

I’m a proud African American woman, and I carry my heritage and my dreams into everything I play. Music and social justice go hand in hand for me—both are about making the world a better place. Sometimes, I’ll play at a rally or vigil, letting my oboe sing where words fall short. Other times, I’m in the park, just playing for anyone who stops to listen.

At home, my kids are my biggest fans. I sing to them, play for them, and remind them that art is as much a tool for joy as it is for change. And if you catch me on the street? Stick around.
